Lending rules and fees

The borrowing of library materials is free of charge. The use of electronic materials is reserved for citizens of Copenhagen only.

Registering loans:

  • All loans must be registered in the libraries self-service lending machines before leaving the library.
  • As a library user you are responsible for the materials you borrow.
  • Parents can borrow library materials for their child on the child's library card.
  • The registration of loans are deleted, when the materials are returned.
  • If your health card/library card is lost, you are obliged to report it to the library to ensure that the card is blocked. Otherwise you will be held responsible for any misuse.
  • The registration of library users is in accordance with The Library Act.
  • Library materials are secured against theft.

Due Dates

  • The standard loan period is 28 days. Certain popular materials may have a shorter loan period.
  • The due date for return is shown on the loan receipt issued to the borrower at the time of the checkout.
  • The loan receipt serves as proof that the borrower has returned the borrowed materials to the library.
  • Borrowers are asked to verify that the item count shown at the bottom of the return receipt is correct.
  • Borrowers can return borrowed materials at any library branch in Copenhagen, regardless of where they have been borrowed.
  • The libraries issue an automatic notification to the borrower 3 days before the due date.


Late return fees:
Days late Adults from 18 years Kids from 0 - 17 years
1 - 7 dage 20 kr. 10 kr.
8 - 30 dage 120 kr. 55 kr.
Over 30 dage 230 kr. 120 kr.



  • As a rule loans may be renewed on the website if no other library user have placed a hold on the materials.
  • Using the PIN code associated with the health insurance or borrower card, borrowers may reserve materials and renew loans on the library's website.
  • Loans renewed over the phone or on the website are logged in the library loan system, but no receipt is issued.
  • Loans may be renewed at any library branch in Copenhagen, regardless of where they have been borrowed.
  • Assuming that no due dates are missed, loans may be renewed twice.


  • Library users may place a hold on materials currently out on loan.
  • The library notifies the library user, when the materials are available. Notifications are normally sent by email and/or sms. It is free of charge.
  • The library user will be required to pay postage for notifications sent by post, regardless of whether the materials are subsequently borrowed.

Loans from other libraries/ interlibrary loans

  • An interlibrary loan is an item that is retrieved from a library system other than Copenhagen Libraries.
  • Renewal of interlibrary loans are possible to the extent that the rules in the library of origin allow it. 
  • Interlibrary loans may only be renewed twice and only if the renewal is made in due time.
  • Interlibrary loans borrowed at Copenhagen Libraries must be returned at a branch of Copenhagen Libraries. If an interlibrary loan it is returned at another library outside Copenhagen, it will not be registered as returned, until Copenhagen Libraries receive a confirmation from the library of origin. This may result in an overdue fee rate.
