It is completely normal for children to grow up multilingual. However, parents of multilingual children often have many doubts and questions about how they can support their child’s language development.

Justin Markussen-Brown will discuss 

  • The two main types of bilingual development
  • How long it takes for a child to develop skills in two languages
  • The benefits of developing strong language skills in multiple languages during childhood
  • Techniques and strategies that parents can use to support their child’s development in their own language, as well as what they can do to support their child’s Danish
  • The obligatory Danish screenings that all bilingual children must undergo when they are 3 years old

  • 17:00 -17:10: Introduction by Amanda Sandegaard
  • 17:10 – 17:55: Presentation by Justin Markussen-Brown
  • 17:55 – 18:05: Break
  • 18:05 – 18:35: Questions from the audience, moderated by Amanda Sandegaard.
  • 18:35 – 19:00: Justin will stay on the 4th floor, if anyone has any further questions.
     

About Amanda Sandegaard and Justin Markussen-Brown

Amanda Sandegaard is a linguist and MA. In children’s language and literature. She has been communicating her knowledge for 5 years tat the Copenhagen Main Library and is behind the video series “Strengthen Your Child’s Language” and the events ‘My Multilingual Child’.

Justin Markussen-Brown is a Danish-Canadian linguist who has researched the language teaching practices of Danish educators and the effects of continuing education in language teaching practices. Justin is known for his easy-to-understand and accessible presentation of the complexity of language acquisition. He is also the father of multilingual children himself.

 

Practical information

  • The event is aimed at parents of children aged 0-6, but everyone who is interested is welcome to participate
  • The event will be held in English, questions can be asked in Danish and English
  • The event will be held at LIVE at the 4th floor of the Main Public Library of Copenhagen
